Special Exhibition “Caricature in Edo – from Toba-e painting to Hokusai/Kuniyoshi/Kyosai”
Visitors can see the essence of the caricature in Edo period through the history of Toba-e.
This exhibition shows the caricature in Edo period with “Toba-e painting” as the keyword.
Toba-e is a term often used widely for caricature and cartoons, but in a more limited context, it is a caricature form which became popular around Osaka in the 18th century with its light and easy strokes.
Its popularity continued until the modern period.
In this exhibition, visitors can see the essence of the caricature in Edo period through the history of Toba-e. One of the highlights is all nine pieces of the series “Kingyo Zukushi (Goldfish Series)” by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (only the 1st Period).
We will show you the world of diverse types of laughing in Osaka where laughter has been developed as a culture.
